Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer – We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do ~ Holy Qur’an – Surah Nahl 16:97

A Spiritual Heart Attack

Analogy adapted from a Zikr Majlis

The effect of sins, has accumulated and congested our hearts. Our hearts in turn, have become hard and distant from the Mercy of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

A person who has a heart problem suffers with many health complications. Blocked arteries, cholesterol and high blood pressure are serious ailments that require prescribed medication. When a person does not bother about his health, omits medication, leads a stressful life and does not abide by the doctor’s forewarning, the consequences to his heart will be severe.

 Plaque (fat and cholesterol deposits) accumulates and causes the arteries to narrow. Oxygen does not flow freely throughout the body and the circulation of blood becomes stagnated. Other organs start failing and are unable to function efficiently. The person is faced with a serious condition and is likely to end up in hospital and undergo a heart bypass.

Our hearts have become so attached to the things of the world that we have become heedless of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. We have caused spiritual damage to our hearts through spiritual cholesterol (pride, malice, jealousy, anger) and high blood pressure (love of dunya).

When the heart becomes spiritually sick (with sins), then the eyes, hands, feet and mind become spiritually sick as well. These limbs will not function properly (due to a decrease in righteous deeds and the clogging of the heart through immoral acts). A person will get evil thoughts and move towards Haraam very swiftly. One will not be able to restrain oneself and keep one’s heart ‘spiritually alive’ easily with these complications.

If we are not going to ‘purify our souls’ (Tazkiyah An-Nafs) by washing and cleansing our heart through Zikrullah, obeying Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam’s commands and detaching ourselves from the vanities of the world … it will result in a ‘Spiritual Heart Attack‘
