Excerpts from ~ Ramadaan 1436 Programmes

bismillahh

Hazrat Aishah Radiallahu Anha reported: Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “The Miswaak (tooth-stick) cleanses and purifies the mouth and pleases the Rabb.” ~
( An-Nasa’i and Ibn Khuzaimah)

The implementation of the Miswaak (a natural toothbrush prepared from the roots of the Arak tree), is a means of purifying the mouth and has many physical and spiritual benefits. Most importantly it is a means of pleasing Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala.

It is a very highly emphasised Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. The way of life of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, is Akmal (most perfect), Ajmal (most beautiful) and As-hal (most easy). It is the pathway that leads a person to Jannah.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has mentioned in a Hadith :

  ‏ ‏ لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ

“Were it not for the fear of over-burdening my Ummah, I would have ordered them to make Miswaak at (the time of) every Salaah.” ~ Sahih Muslim

From this Hadith we can gage, that although making Miswaak is not a compulsory act of Ibaadah, but Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had strongly stressed on observing this Sunnah practice. It was his compassion for the Ummah and fear of them being rendered sinful (if left out), that he did not command it at every Whudu and Salaah. The reward of Salaah (Prayers) is multiplied 70 times if Miswaak was used before it.

The Ulama have mentioned as many as seventy virtues of utilizing the Miswaak, some of which are:

1. It strengthens the gums and prevents tooth decay.
2. It creates a fragrance in the mouth ;
3. It is a cure for illness ;
4. It eliminates bad odours and improves the sense of taste ;
5. It sharpens the memory ;
6. It is a cure for headaches ;
7. It creates lustre (noor) on the face of the one who continually uses it ;
8. It causes the teeth to glow;
9. It strengthens the eyesight ;
10. It assists in digestion
