‘Total Submission’ to the Will of Allah

…The first ten days of Zul Hijjah are among the most auspicious days in the Islamic calendar. Good deeds (Amal-e-Sawleh) that are performed during these ten days are more beloved to Allah than any other time of the year.

The story of Ibraheem AS is greatly associated with Hajj because the origin of Hajj is old as the Kaa’ba (which was built by Ibraheem AS and his son Isma’eel AS). Every act of Hajj reminds us of the noble family of Ibraheem AS and refers back to the righteous actions and struggle of either Ibraheem AS, his wife Hajrah AS or his son Isma’eel AS.

•  The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”(Bukhari)

• The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, has said, “One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to the worship of “Lailatul-Qadr”. (Tirmizi)

• It is also narrated from Ibn Abbaas RA that Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: ” No days are as weighty with Allah and so liked by Him for good deeds than the first ten days of Zul-Hijjah “. Therefore in these days increasingly recite: “La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Al-Hamdu-lillah, Sub-hanallah.” (Tabraani)

• It is reported from Ibn Abbaas RA that Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: ” There is no day wherein any good action is more beloved to Allah Ta’ala than these ten days (the first ten days of Zul Hijjah)”. The Sahaabah RA enquired: ” Not even Jihaad in the path of Allah ? “(i.e. are actions performed in these days more beloved than even the act of Jihaad)”. ” Not even Jihaad in the path of Allah,” replied Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, ”’with the exception of that person who left with his life and wealth (in the path of Allah) and did not return with any of it (i.e. he is martyred)”. (Bukhari, Tabraani)

The Essence of Qurbani ~ Annihilation (Fana) of the Nafs

وَالْفَجْرِ By the dawn

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ And [by] ten nights

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ And [by] the even [number] and the odd

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ And [by] the night when it passes,

هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

Surah Al Fajr ~ 89 : 1-5

Alhumdulilah, we are approaching the Mubaaruk days of Zul Hijjah and the auspicious day of Qurbani.

The lesson of Qurbani teaches us to sacrifice for the sake of Allah. It reminds us that we are slaves of Allah and not of our nafs.

When we place the knife on the throat of the animal, then we should ponder, reflect and imagine, that in reality, we are placing the knife on the ‘throat of our Nafs‘ and we are slaughtering this Nafs of ours … We are slaughtering the evil desires and spiritual maladies of our souls- ie the anger, jealousy, malice, pride, egoism, greed etc.

After making Qurbani bearing this in mind, if we are invited by the evil desires of our nafs again, then we should quickly remind ourselves that we have just slaughtered our Nafs and hence  should not become tempted so easily and return to those sins we have given up, not too long ago!

Ask ourselves – If we are true slaves of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and we endeavour to annihilate (Fana) our Nafs, then why do we succumb so easily to the dictates of our nafs and become slaves of the Nafs that we had just subdued and slaughtered?

وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا • وَالَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًا وَقِيَامًا • وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا • إِنَّهَا سَاءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا • وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا أَنفَقُوا لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ قَوَامًا • وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا • يُضَاعَفْ لَهُ الْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِ مُهَانًا • إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا فَأُولَٰئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا • وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَإِنَّهُ يَتُوبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ مَتَابًا • وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا • وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّوا عَلَيْهَا صُمًّا وَعُمْيَانًا • وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

And the slaves of the Rahman are those who walk on the earth humbly and when the ignorant people speak to them, they reply peacefully, [63] and those who pass the night prostrating and standing before their Lord, [64] and those who say, “Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Jahannam; indeed, its punishment is a persisting affliction. [65] Indeed, evil it is as an abode and a place to dwell in [66] – and those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, and it (i.e. their spending) is moderate in between (the two extremes) [67] – and those who do not invoke any other god along with Allah, and do not kill a person whom Allah has given sanctity, except rightfully, nor do they fornicate; and whoever does it, shall face the recompense of his sin, [68] the punishment will be doubled for him and he will remain there disdained, for ever, [69] except the one who repents and believes and does good deeds, then Allah will change the bad deeds of such people into good ones, and Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful. [70] And whoever repents and does righteous deeds turns to Allah truly [71] – and those who do not witness falsehood, and when they pass by the absurd things, Pass by with dignity [72] and those who, when they are reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall at them as deaf and blind ones [73] – and those who say, “Our Lord, Give us, from our spouses and our children, coolness of eyes and make us heads of the God-fearing. [74] ~ Surah Furqaan : Verses 63~74

In these closing verses of Surah Furqaan, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has mentioned and awarded the title of ‘Ibaad ur Rahmaan’ (True Slaves of Allah) to His honourable and favoured servants.
