Lessons from Hadith Shareef ~ Live in this World as a Traveller (or Wayfarer)

Hadith

It was narrated that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood RA said: “Rasulullalah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam lay down on a reed mat, which left marks on his skin. I said, ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! If you had commanded us we would have spread out for you a softer bedding.’Rasulullalah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ‘What is there between myself and the world? This world and I are just like a rider who stops to rest beneath the shade of a tree then departs and leaves it behind.’” [Sunan Ibn Majah]
Rasulullalah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “By Allah, this world in comparison to the Hereafter is nothing but like one of you who dips his finger in the sea and removes it. So ponder how much (of sea water), does the finger return with.” [Mishkaat]
Hazrat Jabir bin ‘Abdillah (RA) said that Rasulullalah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam once passed by the marketplace, passing from the area of al-‘Aliyah, while people were all around him. He then passed by a dead goat, whose ears were extremely small. He then took it by the ear, saying, “Who amongst you would like to have this (dead goat with small ears) for just a dirham?” They said, “By Allah! Even if it was alive, its small ears will be a deficiency, so how about when it is dead?” Rasulullalah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “By Allah! The dunya is even less significant in the Sight of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala than this is to you.” [ Muslim]

Important aspects discussed in this Hadith :

 • Simplicity

 • Not attaching ourselves and filling our hearts with the love of the world

 • We have come into this transitory world, taking some shade for a few days and then we depart from this world and continue our journey to the Hereafter, without taking anything of this Dunya with us….

• Do not amass wealth. It makes one negligent of the Aakhirah …

• Wealth should be Halaal and used in avenues that take one closer to Allah Ta’ala … (Halaal wealth in the hands of a pious person is very beneficial because it will be used for good causes)

We are permitted to make use of the necessities of Dunya (what we require for daily life), but we have to ensure that our ship does not sail into the ocean of the Dunya. This heart of ours must NOT become submerged in the ‘love of this world’ or else it will sink…. As long as the ship is afloat … it will reach its destination …

May Allah Taala help us to detach ourselves from the love of this world and bring simplicity in our lives …
