Nurturing the Nafs

bismillahh

اَللّٰهُمَّ اَلْهِمْنِىْ رُشْدِىْ وَاَعِذْنِىْ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِىْ

Oh Allah, inspire me with guidance and protect me from the evil of myself

——–

اللهم ات نفسي تقواها وزكها انت خير من زكاها انت وليها ومولاها

Allahumma Aati Nafsi Taqwaahaa Wa-Zakkihaa, Anta Khayru Man Zakkaahaa, Anta Waliyyuhaa Wa-Mawlaahaa

O Allah! Give my soul piety and my conscience purity. You are the Master of my soul and the Guardian of my conscience

Key points discussed

 • The 3 stages of the Nafs:

1) Ammaarah

2) Lawwaamah

3) Mutma-innah

• Providing the soul with beneficial nourishment – Zikrullaah etc

•  Not enriching it with sins and evil deeds

• Do not become a slave of your Nafs by obeying and fulfilling its every dictate and demand

The couplet of our beloved Sheikh, Aarif Billaah Hazrat Hakeem Akhtar Sb in this regard

 • Keeping a vigilant eye on the Nafs

 • Three simple examples of nurturing, disciplining and developing the Nafs, until it is under complete control:

 1) The Nafs as a child

 2) The Nafs as a wild horse

 3) The Nafs as an opponent in a boxing ring

• Duas of Rasulullaah Sallallaahu  alaihi Wasallam for protection against the evils of Nafs

The Reformation (Islaah) of Our Heart

Each one of us needs this Islaah for our own sake … so that we can ‘perfect this soul‘ of ours and reform ourselves otherwise we will remain in a ‘dented’ state.

What is Reformation? It comes from the word ‘reform‘. A person who is deformed needs to be reformed. If he does not reform himself, he will remain deformed. So we need to reform ourselves so that we can ‘perform‘ and do good deeds and please Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala

Naath ~ Ziyaarate Taiba (Visiting Madina Tayyibah)

bismillahh•••

A few points mentioned in the poem :

> The poets ardent love for Madina Shareef is depicted, as he enters the beautiful city, but at the same time he is somewhat gripped with a kind of awe and fear …

 > He is fearful of his sins – but has great hopes in Allah’s mercy …

 > He describes the lofty position of Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam. His sayings (Ahaadith) have become one of the primary sources for the derivation of laws in our Shariat.

 > He describes the humility of Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam, who washed his clothes by himself, and also the poverty he underwent.

 > He was the Seal of Prophethood and Allah had completed his favours upon him and chose Islam as his Deen.

 > Walking on the sand of Madina brings such serenity and delight to the poet … his soles feel the softness and comfort as he treads along. Even the thorn of the trees feel softer than a smooth flower …

 > Likewise, the name “Muhammad” Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam on his tongue, brings him so much joy and ecstasy …

Lessons from Hadith Shareef ~ A Believer Is A Mirror To A Believer

bismillahh

Hadith

Rasulullah Sallalahu alaihi wa sallam said, ‘A Mu’min is a mirror for a Mu’min.’ (Abu Dawud)

Important aspects discussed in this Hadith :

 …

• The similarities of a Believer and a mirror

• Qualities of a mirror >

~ Gives an honest, fair & an unbiased picture of the object

~ It does not belittle the object

~ It does not keep the image for everyone else to see. It does not backbite, nor reveal the image to others

~ It does not travel looking for shortcomings of objects deliberately. The object goes to the mirror

• One doesn’t get angry and upset with the mirror when the weaknesses are shown.

• Accept the advice of a sincere Believer with regards to your shortcomings, weaknesses, faults.

• Don’t blame the mirror. The defect/scar is on the object itself, not the mirror. Don’t blame the advisor (the Alim), nor the Noble Shariah

• Reveal the faults of the other with diplomacy and politely. Don’t look down upon any ones weakness.

• Don’t give up hope and become frustrated, when one fails to take heed to your sincere advices. Continue, with fervent Duas for his reformation
