The Abounding Mercy of Allah Ta’ala and a Recipe for Combating Depression

Excerpts from ~ Ramadaan 1435 Programmes

bismillahh

__________

In Surah Al-Fatir :

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, after Praising Himself (and Only Allah deserves all Praise and is worthy of all Praise), mentions :

مَّا يَفْتَحِ اللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ مِن رَّحْمَةٍ فَلَا مُمْسِكَ لَهَا ۖ وَمَا يُمْسِكْ فَلَا مُرْسِلَ لَهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy  – none can withhold it;
and whatever He withholds – none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise
~ Surah Al’Fatir 35:2

When Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala opens His doors of Mercy, then there can be no person that can hold back that Mercy from coming down… no person in the world, no person on the earth, no being (Angel or jinn) in the skies, can hold back that Mercy from coming upon that person. And, when Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, withholds that Mercy from coming down upon any person, then nobody can bring that Mercy down.

• All Power and Qudrat (Might) lies with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala alone.

__________

In another verse :

Not hidden from Him is an atom’s weight within the heavens or within the earth or [what is] smaller than that or greater, except that it is in a clear register ~ Surah Saba 34:3

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala’s knowledge is All-Encompassing and Infinite. A tiny particle, be it in the earth, above the earth, below the earth, above the skies, between the skies and the earth, no matter how big, no matter how small is all recorded in a Book and in the knowledge of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala …Nothing is hidden from Allah.

Man may need a binoculars, or a microscope to see tiny particles, but Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala requires none of these. Even the thoughts that run through our mind … the thoughts that are contained in our heart … the evil thoughts and intentions that go through our mind, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is well aware of them all.

• We are all dependant upon Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

__________

Allah has conferred a title upon all of us. Allah has called us Fuqaraa (beggars).

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentions :

O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy ~ Surah Fatir 35:15

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says, Oh people, every single one of you are beggars. You are totally dependant upon Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. But Allah Himself is  Al-Ghani (Independent), and Al-Hameed (full of Praise). Allah does not need our praises. Allah has many other creation of His to praise Him. He has Angels to Praise Him …

The Riwayaat (Narrations of Hadith) mention that from the time Allah created certain Angels, some are in the Ruku (bowing) position (reading the tasbeeh of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), others in Sujood (prostration), some in the Qiyaam (standing) position … Allah is infact not even in need of these Angels to praise him!

__________

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentions :

And there is not a thing except that it exalts [ Allah ] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving
~ Surah Isra ~ 17:44

Every single thing that Allah has created Glorifies HIM and makes HIS Tasbeeh, but man will not understand their Praises of Allah. Allah does not need anyone to Praise Him. Allah is absolutely Independent! We require Allah every second of our life … And therefore we should make Dua to Allah to bless us with His Mercy.

Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel RA, gave a very simple example saying that in the month of Ramdaan, the mercies of Allah begin descending like torrential rains. We do not have the type of hearts to ‘see’ those mercies descending, because of our sins. Everyone goes out with buckets to fill his bucket with water, but, one person decides to go out with his bucket turned upside down. He will deprive himself and never fill that bucket with any water. Similarly, Allah’s Mercy comes down like torrential rains … Let us not deprive ourselves of this Mercy of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala …

All of us know deep down what sins we have committed. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is so kind and so Sattaar (concealing) that He hides our faults and does not expose us. In the time of the Bani Israeel, if any person committed a sin at night, then the following morning, it would be written on his front door, that last night this person has committed such and such sin …. Allah has not done this to the Ummat of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. We commit sins and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala hides those sins. Allah looks for opportunities to forgive us! When we make Taubah and Istighfaar, Allah completely washes away those sins. We sin again and again and Allah repeatedly hides those sins from mankind … We make Taubah and Allah washes it away again and again … Allah continues to be so Kareem, so Merciful.

A RECIPE FOR COMBATING DEPRESSION

Allama Aalusi RA, (in his Tafsir of the Qur’an, Ruh al-Ma’ani) mentions a remedy/recipe for all those who suffer from depression, distress, anxiety, fear, and various worries of Dunya. All of us (professionals and the ordinary laymen), go through different worries. Peoples natures differ … some people become extremely stressed and anxious. They become overwhelmed with worries, fears etc …

So he mentions that : “Every morning he contemplates on four verses of the Quraan Shareef, and through the blessings of these verses, Allah removes all his worries and gives him such strength and conviction in Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, that he does not bother about anything thereafter” …

__________

* These verses are :

1

Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy- none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds – none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise
~ Surah Fatir 35:2

Whatever Mercy Allah opens and sends down… there can be no person that can withhold that Mercy from coming down; and when Allah decides to hold back that Mercy then there can be nobody that can force it down … If this is the decision of my Allah, then I am happy. If i am going to be prosperous today, then it is the Mercy of Allah and if Allah is going to hold back His Mercy, then there is no need for me to become distressed.

__________

2

And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful
~ Surah Yunus 10:107

When Allah sends some pain or suffering upon anyone, then there is no person who can remove that harm and pain from him, besides Allah. If Allah decides Khayr (good) for any person then nobody can repel that good. No power can repel that good because Allah has decreed good for that person. And Allah is most powerful.

Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease
~ Surah Ash-Sharh ~ 94:6

After every difficulty, there is always ease and comfort. Many people go through some challenges in life and when it seems as though it is just increasing and not decreasing, they begin to lose hope. They become frustrated …

However, in reality, Allah loves those whom He tests. Ambiya AS encountered the most difficult tests, and then those after them who were close to Allah faced difficulties in life.
Remember, after every difficulty there must be an opening … This is the promise of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does not send tests upon tests and gives one no comfort or relief whatsoever. We sometimes feel that these difficulties are coming in succession, yet we don’t ponder and reflect that there were indeed intervals of ease that we enjoyed as well, which we overlook and take no notice of. Perhaps one may have experienced some financial difficulty or ill health, BUT was also able to breathe, see, hear and move one’s limbs….

Allah Ta’ala Tests Those Who HE Loves:

An example : A father loves his child most dearly … and this child wants a sweet or chocolate from the father … The father will give it to him…..But before he gives it to him, he picks up the chocolate higher and higher and makes the child jump for it. The child is desperate for the chocolate and tries to jump higher .. But after a while, the child’s face changes colour and is almost tearing. It  tries again harder and harder to aim and reach for the chocolate. Then suddenly the child bursts into tears and begins to scream and cry …The father feels pity  and then quickly gives the child the chocolate …

Similarly, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala loves us and does the same to us. We have read in the Quraan and Hadith, about how loving Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is and how Allah loves every single one of us. We all require to have hope in the mercy of Allah. Tests will prevail … but there is always ease thereafter. After every difficulty must come ease and we are required to put all our hopes in Allah.

And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register ~ Surah Hud ~ 11:6

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has taken it upon Himself to sustain and feed His Makhlooq (Creation), whether it is a human being, animal, jinn, insect, bird. Of course, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala wants us to make an effort and acquire our sustenance in a halaal way.  After making a halaal effort, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will most assuredly grant us halaal rozi (sustenance). So, there is no need for stress that will ultimately lead us to depression.

• Whatever is allotted to you will most definitely be yours.

__________

If a person ponders over these “four verses”, he will discover that it is a prescription/ recipe from all types of Depression Insha-Allah.

… Why should one stress then?

Beg from Allah and place our reliance only upon Him!

“These are indeed the inheritors”.
“Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever.”

[Surah Al Muminoon]

A Brief Explanation of the Verses

The word أَفْلَحَ ‘Aflaha’ means successful.

Mufassireen (commentators) have explained that the true meaning of ‘Falaah’ is when a person reaches the epitome of success, ie in every facet of his life, every action of his life, every movement of his life, he is absolutely successful and he encounters no hardship or loss whatsoever. This true and complete Success, can ONLY be achieved in Jannah where a person has no pain, no suffering, no fatigue, no hunger, ie in “Darus Salaam” (The House of Peace). However, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala does give the Believers some solace, comfort and some type of victory and success in this world as well…..

The Sahaba RadhiyAllahu Anhum report, that when sitting around Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, at certain times Jibraeel (AS) would come down with Wahi. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam would remain silent for some time. A very beautiful sound could be heard, which was similar to the ‘buzzing or humming of bees’. So, on one occasion when this happened, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam then turned towards the Qibla and made a Dua :

“O Allah! Increase us (in Your Blessings) and do not decrease us, honour us and do not disgrace us, bestow upon us [from Your Bounties] and do not deprive us, give us preference over others and not others over us, and make us satisfied and be pleased with us.” ~ (Tirmidhi)

and then Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, “Ten verses (of Surah Al Mu’minoon) were revealed to me now, via Jibraeel AS, from Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, and whoever abides by these verses, he shall enter Jannah … These are: ‘Successful indeed are the believers…….‘{until the completion of these Ayaat (23:1-10).}

Sayyida A’isha RadhiyAllahu Anha was once asked: “ What was the character of the Prophet Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam? She replied: His character was the Quraan”~ (Sahih Muslim) … and then she recited these first ten verses of Surah Al Mu’minoon.

In some Riwayaat (narrations of Hadith), it is mentioned that when Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala created Jannatul Adan (Garden of Eternity), then HE told Jannah, : “Speak!”. Jannah then mentioned :

 “قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ”
Successful indeed are the Believers

Who are the True and Successful Believers?

The Noble traits of the Mu’minoon mentioned are :

1. Those who are Khashi’oon (those who possess Khushoo) with their Salaat (prayers)

Most of the Mufassireen have explained, the word Khashi’oon as : those who are ‘still’ in their Salaah; they do not shake around in Salaah; they have full concentration in Salaah; they are devoted and dedicated in their Salaah; their eyes are fixed on the place of Sajdah.
It is mentioned that in the beginning some of the Sahaba RadhiyAllahu Anhum, as they were reading Salaah, they would look towards the sky but when these verses were revealed they immediately began keeping their gaze fixed on the place of Sajdah.

Ulema explain that if a person’s heart has devotion and concentration in Allah, and is able to ponder over the meanings of the verses as he is reciting, then the rest of his limbs will also develop this concentration and this type of Khushoo will come easily into a person.

How do we develop this Khushoo?

We should read alot of Nafl Salaah, and try our level best to concentrate on what we are reciting when standing before Allah Ta’ala. In the beginning of our Salaah we have some concentration, but towards the end, our minds wander. Maintaining this concentration throughout is difficult, but we should make a concerted effort to atleast concentrate on the “meanings of the verses” that are being recited, or at least have this feeling that we are standing before our Allah Ta’ala in Ibaadah. We should endeavour to perfect this Salaah and develop this quality of Khushoo.

Salaah is not a ritual or some ordinary practice, rather it is something that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala himself has ordained for us. It is a time when we ‘connect’ to Allah. Just as we display good manners and etiquettes infront of our boss or during a job interview and we ensure that everything is 110% in order, similarly in Salaah we should realise that we are standing before Allah Ta’ala. …The King of Kings!

If our minds wander aimlessly during Salaat or to our businesses and other  activities in our lives, then we will not be able to develop this type of Khashiyat in our Salaah.

2. Those who turn away from ‘Laghw’

These are those people who move away from all futile things.
Unlike the Believers, the disbelievers are heedless of the day of Qiyamah, because they are involved in frivolous pursuits and futile activities. A Believer is not such, but moves away from futile activities and places of Haraam useless entertainment.

3. And those who discharge their Zakaat

Some Ulema say that this verse was revealed in a Makki Surah, whereas Zakaat became compulsory in Madinah. The essence of what they explain is that the Sahaba (RA) were already ordained to discharge Zakaat in Makkah, but a fixed amount was not incumbent then. It was only ordained later in Madina.

Others have taken the explanation to be, not “Zakaat of Maal” (purification of wealth), but the purification of the heart and soul.
As Allah Taala states in another verse:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
Indeed whosoever purifies himself shall achieve success 87:14 ~ Surah Al ‘Ala

In this verse, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala talks about the purity of our wealth as well as the purity of our hearts

4. And those who protect their Private Parts

These people protect their chastity and do not commit Zinna (fornication). One should control his desires. We are human beings and are created with desires. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has given us permission and has commanded us to satisfy our desires with our pure spouses and our legal slaves (in previous times permission was granted to a master and his slave girl to have intercourse). But, beyond your halaal wife and legal slave, those who seek to gratify their sexual desires or have relationships with somebody else, that is not legal for them.

Also, there are occasions when your legal wife cannot fulfil your desires, eg: Haidh (Menses), Nifaas (Post Partum period) … Intercourse during these occasions will not be permissible.

Similarly, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has made homosexuality Haraam (prohibited) and it is against the natural inclination (fitrah) which Allah has placed in man. Imaam Shafee’e RA has mentioned that the prohibition of masturbation is deduced from this verse as well.

A person should at all times, save himself from Zinna.

5. And those who are faithfully true to their Amanaah (trusts) and to their covenants

These people are those who when entrusted with something, they do not breach that trust. If someone has entrusted them with anything, they are mindful about it.  They safeguard and protect those trusts. And, when they make a promise or take a pledge, they are true to their word. Whatever Amaanat (trust) has been given to them, they are not carefree and do not abuse the usage of those things. Many times we make a promise to some person and we do not meet those promises. This is not the true ettiquette of a Believer.

6. And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory Salaat ) at their fixed stated hours

For a person who is a true believer, Salaah is fundamental. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentions Salaah in the beginning of these ten verses and again at the end. Those who are protective over their Salaah; are mindful about the times of their Salaah……. they do not delay their Salaah. They continously have the concern … “What time is Azaan?” “What time is Jamaat?” “I must not miss my Salaah”. Their minds are continuously concerned about their Salaah. Amongst the A’amaal (deeds) of a person, the very first thing one will be questioned on the day of Qiyamah (Judgement) will be Salaah.

May Allah help us establish Salaah in our lives.

7. These are indeed the inheritors who shall inherit the Firdaus, they shall dwell therein forever.”

These believers, whose qualities have been mentioned, are the inheritors of the perpetual and eternal Jannatul Firdaus. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said that when you make Dua for Jannah, ask for Jannatul Firdaus (the highest level of Jannah whose roof is the Arsh of Allah).

These qualities are of a true Mu’min.

May Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq and Hidayah of trying to bring these beautiful qualities into our lives and may HE make us the Heirs of Jannatul Firdaus.

[All] praise is [due] to Allah , who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. [He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward. In which they will remain forever. And to warn those who say, ” Allah has taken a son.”.They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie. Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed. And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground. Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder? [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.” ~ Surah Al Kahf 18:1-10
